CONSIDER RUSSIA Russia likely has a stronger interest in keeping Assad in power than we have in getting him out of power. Any damage we do in a limited air attack on Syria will likely be more than offset with Russian aid. Russia is not going to tolerate a U. S. blockade of Syrian ports so strip the sea trade embargo option. Taking out the limited air attack and embargo strategies leaves a significant, boots-on-the-ground engagement, or a prolonged air strike, as the only paths that might accomplish something but the cost in lives and dollars would be way too high considering we have little direct interest in the whole affair anyway and we are trying to dig out of a massive budget deficit here at home. . . .Russia won’t roll over on this one as it did with Iraq and Afghanistan. I think they will match us man for man on any ground activity. In the end, Russia will probably up its Assad support just enough to keep him in power. Russia has some serious tank forces they can drop in Syria on short notice—forces we won’t be able to match (without an awfully expensive air show). So, Obama, do the smart thing and get out now. You may have to crawl, but crawling is better than being lugged off in a coffin.
