CONSTRUCTION TO FIX RIVERBANK SLOPE NEAR UNIVERSITY BRIDGE - TopicsExpress

CONSTRUCTION TO FIX RIVERBANK SLOPE NEAR UNIVERSITY BRIDGE BEGINS Beginning today, crews will begin construction work to remediate the riverbank slope along Saskatchewan Crescent between 15th Street and 16th Street. “The solution designed will allow the City to preserve and protect our important roadway and riverbank assets and will involve a deep excavation of the roadway to install a pipe to reduce groundwater levels,” Storm Water Utility Manager Andrew Hildebrandt says. “Crews will also install light-weight, high-density foam that will support the roadway but lighten the load on the slope,” Hildebrandt says. “Additionally, the work has been designed to minimize the environmental impact to trees and greenery around the riverbank.” This section of roadway has been closed since June 2012 when it was discovered that it had begun sliding toward the river. Since then, geotechnical tests determined this slope failure was naturally occurring and caused by the steep incline of the riverbank, the weight of the soil and ground water levels. Through the process, the City has maintained contact with adjacent property owners on the work and its progress. The project will cost $1.26 million and will be funded by the Storm Water Utility. Work is expected to be completed – including road restoration – by November 2013, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen circumstances. The City would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation.
