During her visit, the festival will present David Lynch’s cult film Wild at Heart, in which Dern and co-star Nicolas Cage played the central characters. The film won the Palme d´Or at the 1990 Cannes International Film Festival. Laura Dern was raised in an acting family: her mother Diane Ladd and her father Bruce Dern are longtime Hollywood stars. It was thus a logical decision for her to follow in her parents’ footsteps. Since starting her career in the early 1980s, Dern has had the chance to work with leading American directors and has won numerous awards. She thrice worked with David Lynch – on Blue Velvet in 1986, Wild at Heart in 1990, and Inland Empire in 2006 – and also appeared in Peter Bogdanovich’s Mask (1985). Dern was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for her role in Rambling Rose (1991), where she appeared alongside her mother and managed a truly unique achievement – for the first time in history, a mother and daughter were nominated for Academy Awards for their work on the same film. Dern won a Golden Globe for her role in the television drama Afterburn (1992). In 1993, she achieved popularity among mainstream audiences thanks to her appearance in Steven Spielberg’s box-office hit Jurassic Park, and soon after she played alongside Kevin Costner in Clint Eastwood’s drama A Perfect World. Critics also appreciated her performance in director Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth (1996). Dern regularly appears in films across a range of genres, and has worked with, in addition to David Lynch, directors ranging from Robert Altman (Dr. T & the Women, 2000) to Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, 2012). She has worked in film and television not only as an actress, but also as writer and executive producer. Notable television credits include her performance as Katherine Harris in Recount (2008), for which she won a Golden Globe and received an Emmy nomination, as well as her Golden Globe-winning performance as Amy Jellicoe in the critically acclaimed HBO series Enlightened (2011), which she co-created and executive produced. Dern can currently be seen in cinemas in the new film The Fault in Our Stars. She will also co-star opposite Reese Witherspoon in “Wild,” Nick Hornby’s-scripted adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling 2012 memoir. “Wild,” directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, will be released by Fox Searchlight later this year.
