CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE KARAYE TERRITORIAL KINGDOM FROM 1104AD TO DATE TOWARD THE ATTAINMENT OF POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF KANO STATE 1. “The Magaga Treaty” ushered in peace and cooperation accord between the Kurawa dynasty in Karaye Kingdom and the Bagauda Dynasty during the reign of Tsaraki (Yusa) in the 12th Century and thus created the first Ribat system. 2. Sarkin Karaye Wamban Kano Umaru (1717-1739AD) had the opportunity and courage for the betterment of his people to built a ‘drinking well’ known as “Rariya” which submerged into Challawa Gorge Dam. The Dam currently serves as a tributary to Challawa River Dam with water Reservoir in Panshekara, Tamburawa Water treatment plant, Hadejia- Jama’are River Basin Development Project for irrigation and other purposes. 3. There existed a Diplomatic Marriage between the Karaye Kingdom and the Kano Kingdom where Sarkin Kano Muhammadu Zaki reportedly married Kursiyyatu (Kursu) the daughter of Sarkin Karaye Gudaji in the 17th century. 4. History revealed the eventual Death of Sarkin Kano Muhammad Zaki as a result of injury he sustained from a waged Katsina battle and, his burial in Karaye Royal Palace during reign of his father -in- Law Sarkin Karaye Gudaji. This created the long taboo that any King of Kano who dared to visit Karaye would die. But, this taboo was broken by Sarkin Kano Alhaji Abdullahi Bayero. 5. Research has indicated that, Wamban Kano Giwa son of Sarkin Karaye Gudaji and junior brother of Kursu wife of Sarkin Kano Muhammadu Zaki before becoming Sarkin Karaye (Wambai Giwa) while in Kano, his nephew Sarkin Kano Muhammad Na Zaki once gave him the opportunity to rule Kano in his absence. When he returned from the battle, he found that Giwa had extended the fortified walls of western part of Kano from Gadon Kaya, Dukawuya, Kabuga up to Kansakali Gates. 6. The First Fulani flag authorizing the Jihad in Kano was issued by Sheikh Usman Danfodio at ‘GUDU’ received by Sarkin Karaye Sulaiman Ndoji from Torankawa Clan in 1804 and instantly handed it over to Malam Yusuf Danzabuwa, the representative of Kano Fulani. Similarly, in 1804 at Kwazazzabon ‘Yar Kwando which is a valley bordering between Karaye and Kabo Sulaiman Nadoji was appointed as the First Fulani King of Karaye by the representative of Kano Fulani on a mission to overthrow the Habe rulers of Kano and Karaye. 7. History revealed that, after 40 days seclusion (Halwa) by Sarkin Kano Ibrahim Dabo, he sent Sarkin Dawaki Manu to meet Sarkin Karaye Nadoji and sought his co-operation and prayers for Malam Dabo’s success in ruling Kano in the 19th century. 8. After the Fulani Jihad whenever Sarkin Kano or may partake a Journey to Sokoto, he would as a tradition send emissaries to inform Sarkin Karaye of the impending journey. Sarkin Karaye Alu would escort him with his strong guards to that destination. The trend continued up to Sarkin Karaye Kadir when British conquest took effect. 9. The continued contribution of reknown Islamic scholars who settled with their families at Karaye, in person of Ahmadu Maigari Al-Maghili (Shariff Sidi Kusallah) whose domain now turned to Kusallah Dam. The Dam provides portable drinking water to Karaye, Gwarzo, Shanono and Kiru Local Government Areas. Also, the Wangarawa led by Sheikh Garba Habibullah Maihadda lived there and provided solutions to political and religious problems unsettled anywhere in Kano, popularly called “Karaye Makarar Maganar Kano”. 10. Sarkin Karaye Kadir resisted the British conquest in Northern Nigeria of 1903, was among the dignatories who survived the battle at Bormi where Sultan Attahiru was Killed. He joined Sarkin Sudan Mai Wurno to Sudan and established Karaye town. Karaye town in Republic of SUDAN is located near River Setit in Kassala Province. 11. After the British Conquest, in the early 20th century the colonialists maintained the Kingdom structure of Extra-Territorial control by the Four Ribat Kingdoms of Rano, Dutse, Gaya & Karaye. Accordingly, in 1908 Karaye Kingdom was broken down to Karaye District (Rogo & Gwangwan), Yalwan Danziyal District (Kabo, Getso & Shanono), Tofa District (Tofa, Dawaki, Bagwai) and Bichi District (Danzabuwa, & Dunbulum). While, Kiru & Madobi were shifted to Kura District. 12. The Creation of 5 City Administrators of Kano, Rano, Gaya, Dutse and Karaye by the British Colonialists as “Mayors - Magajin Gari” was aimed at bringing even growth and development in the five cities. 13. In 1954 - 59 Karaye - Kiru acquired a seat at Federal Legislature in Lagos represented by Sarkin Bai, Alh. Mukhtar Adnan. 14. In 1956 the Administrative system introduced District Council (DC) with Sarkin Karaye District Head of Karaye as its Chairman with District Senior Scribe as the Secretary. 15. The construction of road network from Gwarzo - Karaye - Kiru was done with the influence of Sarkin Karaye Abubakar I to ease the movement of goods and services across the State. 16. Karaye Local Government Council was created in May 1989 consisting of 35 Village Heads during Sarkin Karaye Abubakar II who was then the District Head of the Area. He also influenced through His Highness the Emir of Kano Alh. (Dr.) Ado Bayero who specifically requested the former Head of State Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida to sustain the reconstruction of Challawa Gorge Dam by Julius Berger Nig. Plc in 1991 for irrigation and other projects. 17. Sarkin Karaye Ibrahim Abubakar II was the Architect for the establishment of the first Kano Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), Kanye in Kabo Local Government and Kano Free Trade Zone (KFTZ), Panisau in Ungogo Local Government Area. He influenced the establishment of NYSC permanent orientation camp where such Mobile Communication Companies i.e. MTN, Etisalat, Airtel & Globacom were able to establish their mass transmitter services as well as influenced the reconstruction of Karaye – Kabo – Kano Road. He also influenced the construction of the first standard Commercial Bank in Karaye the “Unity Bank Plc” Branch to ease mobility and enhance global banking system. 18. The practice of Royal Agric Show attracted farmers from neighboring towns continued in Karaye up to December 1953. 19. The memorable festivities on Horse racing and display were first staged every year up to 1963 at the Central Market Karaye, witnessed by large spectators from the neighboring towns. 20. The Kusallah Fishing Festival in Karaye which took place in 1996 was coordinated by Kano State Tourism Management Board and attracted tourists from all walks of life. 21. The long annual Rural Durbah since 1804 (Fulani Jihad) is at present a two day event in Karaye during Eid-el-Fitr & Eid-el-Kabir and also attracted large spectators from neighboring cities, which leads to demand for hotel accommodations and other goods & services, adding an economic value to the State revenue. 22. Today, Local, State & Federal Governments as well as National & International agencies utilize the relevance of traditional structure for advocacy as well as grassroots administration of many projects.
