CONTRIBUTIONS made by Bahraini women in the military and security forces were highlighted during a special ceremony yesterday. It was part of celebrations to mark Bahraini Womens Day and was attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and Supreme Council for Women (SCW) president. Personal Representative of the King Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa also attended. The honouring ceremony, held at the Isa Royal Military College in Ras Al Bur, also featured a parade, a show by the military medical teams, an assembly of female soldiers and policewomen, and a performance by the Women Police Musical Group. Bahraini Womens Day has become one of Bahrains unforgettable occasions, in which womens accomplishments are remembered, said Princess Sabeeka, who was deputised to attend the event on behalf of the King. It is an opportunity for the government and private establishments to showcase womens role in building the new Bahrain and safeguarding its accomplishments through the proper honour that sees womens needs integrated into programmes. Princess Sabeeka also thanked the Defence Affairs Ministry and Interior Ministry for their efforts in highlighting the event, which was held under the theme Women in the Military Sector. Bahraini women have achieved a lot over the past 40 years in the military sector and all of its different divisions, Princess Sabeeka said. Women in military are setting an example by standing side by side with their male counterparts to protect this country and its accomplishments. Through support from both ministries, women have reached leading posts and ranks in the sector, something they truly and undoubtedly deserve, she said. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Defence Affairs Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa said women empowerment was present in every sector in Bahrain, especially the military. Women today have become fresh faces in the military, whose contributions are necessary and vital, he said. The accomplishments by women in military reflect a true civilised image of the country, whether in the training received or in the education given. Interior Ministry women police director Colonel Mona Abdulraheem said women working in the security forces were a model for discipline, contribution and commitment. Since the first policewomen force was established in 1970 in a pioneering effort in the Arab region, women have worked alongside men to protect law and order, and exercise security at all levels, she added.
