Warsaw was the somewhat controversial choice as host city for the COP 19 climate change conference which got under way this morning. Everystockphoto/rightee. The 2013 United Nations Climate Change Conference this morning got under way in Warsaw and will feature several international solar organizations exhibiting over the 11 days of the COP (conference of parties) 19 event. The International Council for Sustainable Energy (ICSE), International Network for Sustainable Energy (INFORSE) and International Solar Energy Society (ISES) are among the blizzard of acronyms that will confront delegates throughout the conference. And the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA) and a coalition of 80 global universities will be among the exhibitors with stalls at the high level portion of COP 19, to be held from next Monday to Friday. As part of the conference, energy economist Michael Stavy will be presenting his paper examining what sort of explosion in global solar energy uptake could occur if politicians at COP 19 extended the Kyoto Protocol on global emissions, the World Trade Organization (WTO) permitted the introduction of carbon taxes on imports worldwide and if the U.S. signed the Kyoto agreement. Those hopes, however, seem very unlikely to be realized with global green groups entering the conference with low expectations, not least because of the controversial decision to stage COP 19 in Poland, a country with a less-than-distinguished record on environmental issues.
