CORNEA TRANSPLANT UPDATE: I had a corneal transplant operation - TopicsExpress

CORNEA TRANSPLANT UPDATE: I had a corneal transplant operation on May 1, 2014. My crooked cornea was removed and new healthy cornea tissue was stitched into its place. There were 16 tiny suture loops surrounding my eye; imagine a circle of millimeter-long lines radiating out like sun rays. Over the last seven months, the doctor has been removing the stitches one by one, to allow the tissue to settle into a proper shape. The first few times, he removed a suture from the top left, then the next month he removed a suture from the bottom right, etc. Sometimes he takes out two. Each time, he just numbed my eye with some anesthetic eyedrops, snipped the tiny suture with a scissors, and then used a tweezer to pull the suture out of the tissue. Fortunately, because the vision in the eye is still uncorrected, I cant see what hes doing. I cant feel it either; however... I can hear it. The sound of a piece of thread being snipped on the surface of your eyeball is, to put it mildly, freaky. But, because its your EYE, you cant freak out because youre keeping your head perfectly still. And then, before you know it, hes done. Ive gone back every month or so since June. Its been painless and easy. Today, however, was a bit crazy. He removed SIX sutures! While it was still painless, it was REALLY difficult to keep still during all the SAWING and YANKING! But, everything went well, and with only a few sutures remaining, Im in the homestretch. My next eye doctor appointment is in February, and soon after I can get a new contact lens and SEE. More news in a month. Until then, Snippy New Year!
