CORPUS CHRISTI - For years, weve heard that the number of abused children was around one in a hundred. However, new research shows the number is actually fifteen times that many. More than four children die every day as a direct result of child abuse. The National Child Abuse Foundation said about 70% of those children are under the age of four. And by age eighteen, almost 15% of all children experience a case of abuse or neglect. Marisol Gomez with the Methodist Childrens Home said the only way that percentage will change is if the community starts speaking out. Dont assume that the problem is going to fix itself, she said. Dont assume that someone else is going to report it, or someone else is going to handle the situation. She said although the number of abused and neglected children is going up, the number of foster homes is not. Its a tough decision, said Gomez. Its not something that you just wake up one day, like, Oh Im going to foster. Its something that really has to be put on your heart to do. The Methodist Childrens Home holds a foster care information class every first Tuesday of the month. For more information, you can contact Marisol Gomez at (361) 334-2255.
