CORRECTING THE RECORD The ALP candidate for Indi, Robyn Walsh, today challenged the perception in the community that the ALP had neglected the North East. “On a Federal level, there’s been huge investment in projects in this area,” Mrs Walsh said. “As well spending over $100 million locally on BER projects (including $6 million on a Trades Training Centre at Wodonga) we’ve seen investment in major infrastructure projects, such as - $65 million for the Albury/Wodonga Cancer Centre; $3 million for ‘The Cube’ in Wodonga; $2.5 million for the Ovens Riverside precinct in Wangaratta; Unprecedented Federal government funding for the Great Victorian Rail Trail, Australia’s biggest single Rail Trail project - and many, many other projects which have delivered real benefits to our community.” “And, of course, there are local initiatives, such as the Cancer Centre and HeadSpace, funded under Labor programs.” Mrs Walsh pointed out that the push to make Albury-Wodonga a regional centre was, in fact, the result of a Labor government intiative. “Albury-Wodonga was the primary focus of Whitlam’s plan to decentralise and encourage people to move inland,” Mrs Walsh said. “The whole community still benefits from this.” “As for the idea that the views of ordinary people here are ignored, that’s also contrary to the evidence.” “Apart from the headline issues of the Cancer Centre and HeadSpace, where action by the government was driven by the community, Labor has a long record of consulting with the North East on policy matters.” “A range of policy forums – open to all comers - have been held throughout the North East over the last two decades, driving not only State but Federal policy initiatives.” “Indi Labor members have played key roles in state Labor’s Country Labor Executive, which has a key role in policy development for both the Victorian and Federal Labor party.” “The former State government held two Community Cabinet meetings in this region, giving any resident of Indi the opportunity to have input to the government.” “Labor has a proud record of investing in the North East, and is always looking for ways to engage the community positively.” “I will continue to work towards delivering programs with real benefits to North East residents, such as the NBN.”
