CORRECTION: Thanks to MOP - Members-of-the-Public for pointing out the mistakes made in this article from Daily Egypt News at we posted earlier today. #BanLiveExport : We have seen this article doing the rounds. We decided to share it as there is some misleading information in this article that we wanted to point out. This demonstrates that we really need to be on the ball when the trade, or our government, talk to the media. This article implies that the halt to Egypt was due to the footage that emerged in May 2013. You may remember that as the trade assured the Australian public that they had put in place a Self Imposed Ban. This is actually not true. The trade to Egypt had already been halted, in August 2012, due to the use of the growth hormone promotant (GHP) implants. You may remember this? There was talk that they were contemplating cutting the ears off the cattle. Trade was never recommenced. In May 2013, the cruelty that was captured in the approved facility in Egypt (touted at the time as being better than ESCAS because it was a closed loop facility) involved the cattle that had been disputed back in August 2012. As far as we can ascertain, the GHP issue has never been resolved. Please keep this in mind when reading this article. We will leave a link to the dispute around the use of the implants in a comment under this post. Here is the section of the article that is incorrect as the trade had already been halted by Egypt: Earlier in August, El-Leithy met with Alison Penfold, the CEO of the Australian Livestock Exporters Council, to negotiate restoring cattle exports which had been halted in May after a video reportedly recorded in an Egyptian slaughterhouse displayed acts of animal cruelty. dailynewsegypt/2014/01/22/australian-minister-of-agriculture-to-visit-egypt-in-april-foreign-ministry/
