CORRUPTION OF FACE-VALUE: It is our human tendency to be awestruck and bedazzled by those with who are more wealthy and enjoy a higher status in society. Judges, being human, put senior counsels on a pedestal. On the other hand, they treat relatively junior lawyers like dirt. Such corruption of face value, as it is called, is rampant in Indian judiciary. And this has grave consequences for anybody seeking justice, because a bada vakil can favourably influence judges and cow down the opposing lawyers of lesser stature. (For their ability to give this sort of unfair advantage, senior counsels earn indecent amounts of money. On days when courts admit new cases, senior counsels routinely take take home Rs 20 lakh -- more than the annual salary of the Chief Justice of India. Many take home such amounts in cash, without even issuing a receipt.) So, if you can only afford to engage an ordinary lawyer, while the other side has engaged Jethmalani, Singhvi, Jaitley etc, then God help you and your cause. Because the scales of justice are heavily tilted on the other side.
