COUNCIL 81 ALERT FRIDAY IS THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER! 50th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King “I Have a Dream” Speech! This Friday, August 2, 2013 is the deadline for reserving your seat on the bus to Washington, DC for the rally at the 50th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King “I Have a Dream Speech.” We have heard throughout our locals of the great demand to attend, however, we haven’t received the registration forms. Seating will be on a first-come, first served basis, so reserve your seat now before the deadline. This is an historic event! Although 50 years have passed since Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, we know that all of the dream has not been fulfilled and the struggle for civil rights and voter rights continues. On Saturday, August 24, 2013, over 200,000 members of labor and their families and multitudes of others will meet at the Lincoln Memorial where just fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed another multitude and gave the world his “I Have a Dream” speech. AFSCME International and Council 81 want to be sure you and your family can take part in this historic event. We will be making arrangements for a bus to travel to Washington for the day’s events on a first-come, first-served basis. If there is sufficient interest, we will add another bus on the same first-come, first-served basis. We know from the time of year, the weather will be extremely hot and the day of travel and events will be long, so we ask everyone to assess their ability to participate. The bus(ses) will leave Delaware around 6:30 a.m. and will arrive in Washington, DC at the RFK Stadium. AFSCME International will be at the RFK Stadium to distribute each participant with a T-Shirt, Metro Card, Water and a Box Lunch. From RFK Stadium, we will take the Metro to the Foggy Bottom Metro Station and then walk another 1/4 mile or so to the Lincoln Memorial. Those who have ADA concerns should note the physical requirements of participating and may choose not to attend. We should arrive around 10:00 a.m. and will participate in the speaking events taking place in commemoration of the anniversary. One of the scheduled speakers is our own AFSCME International President Lee A. Saunders. Around 1:00 – 1:30 p.m., there will be a march from the Lincoln Memorial to the MLK Memorial. With the great numbers of people the march will be long and will last longer than the time we have to walk back to Foggy Bottom Metro Station and return to our bus(ses) at RFK Stadium to leave around 4:00 p.m. for the return to Delaware with an anticipated arrival time between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. depending on the traffic generated by the event. WHAT SHOULD I DO TO ATTEND?
