COUNCIL 81 UPDATE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Become aware and take action! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While there are many organizations participating in this effort, Council 81 encourages our members, their families, friends, community and labor partners to become aware of this devastating disease, take action for its prevention and contribute to its ultimate eradication. Breast cancer by the numbers, according to the American Cancer Society: These statistics are included in an American Cancer Society report - Breast Cancer Facts & Figures 2013-2014 - cancer.org/acs/groups/content/@research/documents/document/acspc-042725.pdf About 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2013 About 64,640 new cases of carcinoma in situ with be diagnosed. This is the earliest and non-invasive form of breast cancer Breast cancer is the number two leading cause of cancer death in women. Lung cancer is number one. Currently there are 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. Susan G. Komen for the Cure shared even more facts and statistics: Approximately one in eight women (12 percent) will be affected by breast cancer in her lifetime. While women appear to be diagnosed younger and younger, women over 40 are three times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Five to 10 percent of all breast cancer cases are related to a genetic mutation. When breast cancer is detected early and confined to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is 98 percent.
