COUNCIL MEETING UPDATE So, it pretty much went as I figured it would... The bridge is going to come out and be moved to Mike Weir Park. Council didnt (couldnt, actually) vote to delay the plan they approved in September, because they slotted me into the budget meeting, rather than the regular meeting and at the budget meeting, they simply hear delegations, for consideration in the budget deliberations and dont make any decisions. Whether that was intentional, well never know... Since the bridge will likely be lifted out this week, or next (or, a bit later, if the weather doesnt cooperate), theres simply no time (and no will) to stop the process mid-stream and explore other options, before budget deliberations, which begin in December. While I held out a dim hope that something dramatic might happen at the meeting, I always considered todays presentation as part of the ongoing effort and didnt really expect the city to do what I was recommending. Rather, I wanted to put the arguments out there BEFORE the bridge was removed, so that not only could no one claim, after the fact, that they were unaware of the structural integrity of the bridge, but also put the options and possible costs and pitfalls out there, so that the city knows whats going to happen if they just blunder ahead, as they so often seem to do. Already, we see that the decision to relocate the bridge to Mike Weir was probably short sighted and possibly, unnecessary. How many more ill-considered decisions are yet to be made? The idea is to keep the city aware that WE are aware and try to minimize the chance of more poor outcomes occurring. By doing that, we increase the odds (however, low they are quickly becoming) that the bridge gets preserved and eventually, reused. Because the fact remains; this bridge was and still can be a perfectly viable crossing for the Cull Drain. https://facebook/groups/cull.drain.bridge/766126306792245/
