COUNCILMEMBER PARKS APPEARING LIVE ON CNN NEWSROOM TO DISCUSS POLICE PROTOCOL AND ERIC GARNER’S DEATH WHAT: Councilmember Bernard C. Parks will appear live on CNN Newsroom with host Brooke Baldwin at 12 p.m. (pacific time) to discuss police tactics utilized during the arrest and subsequent death of Eric Garner. On December 3, 2014, a Staten Island grand jury voted not to indict the officer who put Garner in a chokehold intended to subdue him. In 1993, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) banned chokeholds after a 20-year-old died in police custody due to the controversial restraint method. The no indictment decision reached by the Staten Island grand jury had many drawing comparisons to the same decision reached in Ferguson, Missouri a week ago regarding the death of Michael Brown. Both incidents have had many people examining race and its intersection with how police enforce the law and racially profile. Since both decisions were announced, several marches and protests have taken place in cities nationwide. Parks, a Civil Rights Walk of Fame inductee, served as Chief of Police for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1997-2002 and as an officer for 38 years. He was Assistant Chief during the OJ Simpson chase and Deputy Chief during the Rodney King beating: two highly incendiary events in Los Angeles’s and the world’s history. Councilmember Bernard C. Parks is concluding his third and final term as a Councilmember for the 8th district in the City of Los Angeles. As Councilmember, he is a staunch advocate for holding elected officials accountable for their actions and promoting transparency. As former Chief of Police with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), he is credited with creating the nation’s first Cold Case Unit to close unsolved crimes and reforming one of the nation’s most renowned police forces. Councilmember Bernard C. Parks will celebrate 50 years of public service on February 1, 2015. WHEN: Thursday, December 4, 12:00 p.m. (pacific time) WHO: Councilmember Bernard C. Parks Host, Brooke Baldwin Guest, Attorney Linda Kenney Baden WHERE: On TV, CNN Newsroom Check your cable provider for channel.
