COUNTDOWN TO MEMORIAL DAY 2014 In 1944, Allied B-29 Superfortress bombers began bombing Japanese facilities in Thailand; U.S. Marines invaded Saipan and Guam; and U.S. carrier-based fighters shot down 220 Japanese planes in the Marianas Turkey Shoot. As their homeland became increasingly threatened, Japan unleashed what Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr. described as the only weapon I ever feared in the war, the Kamikaze. The first Kamikaze raid on American forces occurred off Leyte Island, Philippine Islands on October 25, 1944. While over 3,000 Americans and British were killed by the end of the war in the 1,321 Kamikaze attacks, this much feared weapon was far to little to stop the eventual capture of the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
