COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TO MEET TODAY -- Alexander County’s budget was further discussed, but no action was taken, during the County Commissioners’ work session last Thursday, June 13. The board will hold a meeting today (June 19) at 6 p.m. at CVCC Alexander Center for Education to make a final decision on the 2013-2014 budget. During last week’s session, the Commissioners heard numbers from County Manager Rick French and discussed a proposed $34,088,803 budget. This would have no property tax increase. The proposal did not contain funds for Dayton Building demolition ($75,000), construction of an evidence storage building at the new Alexander County Law Enforcement Center ($100,000), or funding to build a new County Garage ($265,000). However, the Commission later reached a consensus to add in funds to the 2013-14 budget for the Dayton demolition and building the evidence storage and garage facilities. Building these facilities has priority over the demolition, because the Dayton property currently houses the garage and evidence storage. Dr. Brock Womble, Alexander County Schools Superintendent, attended the work session, asking Commissioners. Earlier, the school system had asked for an additional $600,000 allotment from the County on top of its yearly $5,150,000 received from the County. This was not reflected in the proposed budget figure. However, the Board of Commissioners have tentatively agreed to put an extra $250,000 in the schools’ allotment. Sheriff Chris Bowman and Chief Deputy Tod Jones were on hand at the work session to indicate the necessity of new staff for Detention and the Sheriff’s Office.
