~ COURAGE & DIGNITY ~ On the seventh day of the feast, when King Xerxes was in high spirits because of the wine, he told the seven eunuchs who attended him ... to bring Queen Vashti to him with the royal crown on her head. He wanted the nobles and all the other men to gaze on her beauty, for she was a very beautiful woman. But when they conveyed the kings orders to Queen Vashti, she refused to come. This made the king furious, and he burned with anger. ~ ESTHER 1:10-11 Xerxes made a rash, half-drunk decision, based purely on feelings. His self-restraint and practical wisdom were weakened by too much wine. Poor decisions are made when people dont think clearly, and impulsive decision-making leads to severe complications. When Queen Vashti refused the kings order to appear, everyone was shocked. Being paraded before a bunch of drunks for their amusement is not something any lady would enjoy. All women have their standards; none deserves to be treated like a piece of property. LORD, when someone wants me to compromise my values or lower my standards to accomodate them and make them feel like royalty, remind me of Vashti and her courage and dignity in the face of intimidation ... Amen.
