COURT ORDERS REPATRIATION OF 23 REFUGEES By Yobesh Onwong’a A Nakuru court has ordered 23 refugees to be handed over to Kakuma Refugee Camp for repatriation to Somalia. The 23 were arrested last week at Salgaa trading centre along the busy Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. They were heading to an identified destination. Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Loise Komingoi, the refugees were charged with sneaking out of the Kakuma Refugee Camp in violation of the provisions of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) statute. The mandate of UNHCR, based on its statute, is to provide international protection to refugees who fall within the scope of the statute and seek durable solution to the problem of refugees. The 23 pleaded guilty to the charges and requested the court to be handed over to the Kakuma Refugee Camp. The court granted their request and ordered their immediate transfer to the camp.
