COURT REMANDS OGUN MONARCH, 4 OTHERS IN PRISON FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER A traditional ruler in Ogun State and four others were on Thursday remanded in prison over alleged attempted murder and abduction of a police inspector, Joseph Mulero, and one Morufu Sunmonu. The village head of Alapoti community in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state, Mufutau Obabiyi, and four others were arraigned before an Ado- Odo Magistrate Court on a three -count charge of conspiracy, felony and kidnapping. The charge sheet reads that, “Chief Mufutau Obabiyi, Chief Erubami Saheed; Saka Yakubu ; Saka Iyanbo, Afisu Oke also known as Surutu and others still at large on September 16, 2012 at Kofunlerin Village in Ado Odo/Ota local government area of Ogun State conspired to commit felony-kidnapping thereby committing an offence punish able under Section 516 of the criminal code, cap 77 law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as applicable in Ogun State.” At the court, the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Akin Owanade from Force CID, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos, said that the accused kidnapped Mr. Sunmonu, which according to him, is an offence punishable under Section 364 of the criminal code, Cap 77. “They also attempted to murder a Police Inspector, Mulero Joseph by shooting him with gun in the right leg thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 320 of criminal code cap 77,” he told the court. Similarly, the accused were alleged to have robbed their victims of a telephone handset, ID card belonging to one Akin Maku, and a sum of N200, 000 The counsel to the accused persons, however, pleaded with the court to grant his clients bail, an application the prosecutor objected to; urging the court to keep the accused in prison pending a receipt of the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution. In his ruling, Magistrate Olukayode Ilo said the defense counsel could not convince the court and thereby ordered that the accused be remanded in prison while the matter was adjourned till November 13.
