CPI(M) Mourns Dr. U R Unathamurthy Great Public Intellectual Powerful Champion of Secularism, Democracy and Equality Karnataka State Committee of CPI(M) deeply mourns passing away of eminent writer, intellectual and socialist Dr. U R Anathamurthy. In his death India (not only Karnataka) has lost a powerful Champion of our constitutional values of Secularism, Democracy and Equality. Dr.Ananthamurthy’s literary accomplishments are well known. His Novels ‘Samskara’, ‘Bharatipura’; Short stories such as ‘Ghatashraddha’, ‘Mouni’, ‘AkashamattuBekku’; Non-fiction like ‘PrajnemattuParisara’, ‘Sannivesha’, ‘MaatuSotaBharata’, translations of Brecht - are widely read and well known. Four of his Novels/Stories have been made into much acclaimed films. Works of no other Kannada writer has been translated into so many Indian and World languages. His contributions as Head of Central Sahitya Academy and National Book Trust are also noteworthy. He was very popular as a teacher and educationist. We - at left organisations, movements and parties - cherish the memories of his association, continuous dialogues and critical support to us. We remember with pride that he was the Chief Guest at inauguration of EMS Bhavan at Bangalore, Karnataka state Headquarters of our party. As part of this close association, Dr. Ananthamurthy was invited by Kerala LDF Government to be VC of Mahatma Gandhi University 1987-1991 and head the Higher Education Council recently. However, his role as an intellectual in recent decades, his responses to current socio-political issues without fear of controversies or sometimes even dragging himself into controversies, creating public debates and consciousness on the issues, was truly unique and unparalleled. He truly stood out in bold relief as an ideal ‘Public Intellectual’, amidst Writers, Artists and Intellectuals, who think and at least act as if literature-culture have nothing to do with politics. His unequivocal support for education in Mother Tongue, reservation in education; his staunch opposition to and critique of - communalism, fascist tendencies and Development models in vogue, are noteworthy. The tradition he created of Public Intellectuals is of utmost importance and significance. His death has created a big void in the sphere of Public Intellectuals in our society. Endeavour to strengthen and take forward the tradition of Public Intellectuals who champion the cause of Secularism, Democracy and Equality, can only be a worthy tribute to the Great Public Intellectual that Dr. Ananthamurthy was.
