CQD Carferry no. 18 Sinking. Help. - One newspaper said this was the first time that the telegraph distress signal CQD was used on the Great Lakes. Pere Marquette 17 raced to the scene and pulled alongside the 18 at 7:15am but the 18 lurched and went to the bottom 15 minutes later with 26 still on board. Another news account said Purser SF Sepzepanek handed a money bag to a survivor with $1000 in salaries in it. The survivor tied it to the PM18s railing to prevent the heavy coins inside from dragging him down into the water. The purser and captain were among the 8 bodies that were located after the disaster. It all happened on this date in 1910. Learn more about our local maritime history with our live concert STORM
