CR baseball gets first GVC win at Feather River College of the Redwoods leadoff batter Ansel Cecil hit a bases-clearing double, helping ignite a seven-run sixth inning as the Corsairs picked up their first Golden Valley Conference win in the first game of a baseball doubleheader at Feather River on Saturday, beating the No. 5 ranked team in the state 11-7 to snap their 12-game losing streak. Feather River bounced back in the nightcap, beating CR 11-1 in seven innings. “We’ve had our struggles and been in a lot of games that we were unable to finish, but today we came out with a lot of energy and got the job done against a quality team,” said CR head coach Bob Brown. “It was a great win for our program and for this team, which I think really came together as a unit today and learned a lot about what it takes to be successful at this level.” With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth of the opener, CR loaded the bases off of two walks and a hit batsman, then Cameron Wood, who finished the game 3-for-5, delivered a two-RBI single, which was later followed by Cecil’s bases-clearing double. “It was a 3-2 pitch and he hit a shot in the gap, which was the back-breaker,” Brown said. CR starting pitcher Brandon Downey went seven innings in the win, striking out five with zero walks and allowed only two earned runs. In the nightcap, the Corsairs had just four hits and scored their only run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Dalton Pachano. “We were competitive the first five innings and had a chance to make to make it 3-2, but they made a great play to throw us out at home plate to end the inning and it was a real momentum shifter,” Brown said. “After that the wind kind of came out of our sail, but Feather River is as good as a team as we’ll face all year so it was huge for us to get a victory against them.” After the split, the Corsairs stand at 1-4 in the GVC (2-14 overall) and will play next, weather permitting, in a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m. Saturday’s Box Scores Game 1 Redwoods 11, Feather River 7 CR- 010 007 210- 11 9 2 FR- 000 100 222- 7 11 3 WP- Downey, 7 IP, 5 K, 0 BB, 2 ER Hitting- (CR) Cecil 1-6, 4 RBI, 2B, Gutierrez 2-4, R, Hatch 1-4, Stearns 1-5, 2B, Props 1-4, 2B, Wood 3-5, 2 RBI, Pachano 1-5, RBI, Plummer 1-4, RBI, Frazier 0-3, 2 RBI Game 2 Feather River 11, Redwoods 1 CR- 000 010 0- 1 4 3 FR- 020 124 2- 11 18 1 LP- Johnson, 5 IP, 3 K, BB, 5 ER Hitting- (CR) Cecil 1-3, Gutierrez 1-3, 2B, Pachano 1-3, RBI, Bubenic 1-2
