CRAZY :: I was reminded again today (for the first time in about 10 years) of something that left me feeling kinda stupid, pretty damned intelligent and, well, cheated, duped, used and taken. In 1998, I was approached by a friend and coworker who was, at that time, a top exec at Verizon. He had seen my writing style in various newspapers and other local publications. I was, at that time, a bit of an op-ed buff as well. He wanted me to write a 3000 to 5000 word opinion on the topic of Information Society and how the flow of information, the impact of technology, past present and future, had and would impact American social strata.... socio-politicallly, socio-economically, etc. He wanted references, if any, but mostly my intellectually informed opinions... my thoughts.... my intellectual property, if you will. I asked why he wanted it and he said I have a little project going--I cant really tell you much about it. So, I spent a couple of weeks working on it here and there and provided it to him. I spent maybe 15 to 20 hours of actual time on it. About a year later, I learned that my written opinion had become 95% of the guys Dissertation in getting his PhD and he had become Dr. ___ ____. I was looking for something online today and came across yet another one of his books on the topic. Ive not spoken with him since and Im not even sure Id bring it up but, wow, talk about a weird kinda feeling of being robbed and complimented all at once—I wrote a Dissertation that landed a PhD.... for someone else. No credit, no thank you... just the gimme.
