CREAMATION IN HINDUISM 15/3/13 The matter to be discussed is really pathetic since it is associated with forever farewell of a person from the world. The farewell is must since it is our beyond capacity to keep him or her with us. Where there is death, there is always a river of sorrow. It is an endless flow of imprinted memory created in the mind by our beloved who has already gone as a departed soul. Acceptance of farewell for good is really a melancholy business. But even then having no alternative we must accept the reality of principle of the Nature. The physical existence of the deceased gets started to extinct from the moment of burning the dead body. We become a mere spectator of a burning fire which devour the body of our beloved. There may be argumantive points regarding ongoing means of cremation of dead body in Hindu’s Vedic way. Because enviorurmentally ethical question may arise over the burial of dead body by way of burning . As per report it is estimated that 11 kg.mercury is emitted into the air annually. In addition to that usages of formaldehyde, hidrocloric acid ,carbondi-oxide in preserving dead bodies play a vital role in polluting air. Chemical and plastic are used in artificial joints and implants. There may be some ethical questions over the matter of burning of dead body for cremation. Apart from antienviourmental facts there is another truth of Hindu’s death farewell ritual which is really difficult to accept from all sides –mentally, emotionally, logically. The dead bodies are made completely clothing off before it is placed on the wooden pieces prepared for burning. It is not understood as to why the dead body is made naked. I do not find logic at all in this regard. Seeing naked body of our beloved deceased is quite an expression showing disrespect to him who has just left for heavenly abode. The person who was cautious at every moment with private parts of his body or did not like to get naked in front of others is made naked for cremation. Is this not a barbaric farewell to our beloved deceased from our end. As because the dead person cannot protest against his or her disliking, we fulfil our ritualistic satisfaction in the name of religious beliefs. I personally cannot consider such inhuman salute as a hearty farewell to our near and dear. The famous writer khuswant Sing said that the death should be observed ceremoniously. Perhaps nobody desires to express his willingness to be got cremated with naked body. If so ,why cannot we stop such malpractices? We should try our level best to fulfil the dreams of the deceased .But on the other hand we ignore the thoughts and feelings of living period of the deceased .Personally I am still imprinted with two such undesired naked human embodiment perhaps which I will have to carry until death .I do not know how can we become so cruel with the death of our dearest one or how can we become so shameless at the death of our nearest one who was extremely meticulous with his or her decent dresses .Is it not a hypocrisy to adore the photograph of our dearest deceased with a garland to whom we did not hesitate to remove all clothes before cremation. Nothing is absolute in the world. Everything is evolutionary. Can we not think of changing our mind towards some dogmatic ritualistic culture? Promod Borah , Dispur, Guwahati-6
