CREOLE CULTURAL NEWSFLASH: Creole products were long known in Louisianas pre-1968 Creole culture. But, since Cajunizations relabeling of both our language and food culture as Cajun no one born in the Lafayette area after the 1970s knows this. Creole was a term which represented a SHARED CULTURE of the diverse French-speaking people of south Louisiana and there were Creole belles and beaux, creole tomatoes, creole sweet potatoes, creole dogs and even washboards. All that meant was born or made in the colony and implied exceptional quality! Creole represents the multi-ethnic people of French-speaking Louisiana with no regard for ones skin color-contrary to the ignorance that insists otherwise. In Louisiana courthouse records EVERY ethnicity regardless of if they were black or white were referred to with the generic creole if they were native-born as opposed to their foreign-born parents. This is also why the phrase creoles de couleur (creoles of color) exists; to distinguish non-white creoles from white creoles. And, yes, there are black creoles too! Ask anyone from France for example, if there are any white creoles in Guadeloupe or Martinique and see them look at you as if youre stupid to even wonder about it! Of course, there are! Fortunately, in spite of the backwards racial issues and confusion spun out of Lafayettes racist stereotyping of our singular Louisiana-born or historic creole culture as Cajun -to mean only and all white French-speaking Louisiana people, and the equally inane other half of this cultural Siamese twin as Creole means black French-speaking Louisiana people only... there still are some of these products around and the good news is that there are new ones keeping the memory of our rich heritage and culture alive! In keeping with this long, but more recently suppressed history of Louisianas historic and pre-Acadian and ever-present Creole culture, Blue Bell Ice Cream has rediscovered our Old World Louisiana CREOLE flavors and quality! And, so have other delicious product companies such as Zapps Potato Chips whove produced their Sweet Creole Onion brand! I serve both to my Louisiana Creole Guesthouse & Food Club guests! See these below and try them! They can be found at major food stores now! So, do yourself a flavor and discover the pleasures and treasures of Louisianas people, and of our oldest and original and abiding culture!
