"CREW’s original complaint to the Indiana Secretary of State was limited to accusing the James Madison Center for Free Speech of failing to register in the state of Indiana as an incorporated private foundation. Its other complaints, filed with other government entities including the IRS, accuse Bopp of improperly profiting from the not-for-profit James Madison Center. Those complaints were not addressed by Bonnet’s July 23 letter to CREW. In response to Bonnet’s letter, CREW further charged: “Perhaps it is his relationship with Mr. Bopp that has blinded Mr. Bonnet to JMCFS legal violations…” As evidence of such a “relationship,” CREW points to a Times of Northwest Indiana article that states Bonnet was seen “passing documents to Bopp” during a hearing at which Bopp was representing the former Indiana Secretary of State, Charlie White. On Friday, Bopp responded to that allegation, saying he has “no personal relationship” with Bonnet. “I had a couple of minor dealings with him. Getting information from the Secretary of State’s office related to the matter. Official records and stuff. I have no relationship with him,” Bopp said. Even if Bonnet were his friend, Bopp added, it would not prove Bonnet acted improperly. “Even if he were [a friend], that vast majority of friends don’t do illegal things just because of their friendship,” Bopp said."
