CRIME ALERT: Purse Snatchings ~Please Be Careful and Aware of Your Surroundings~ (Fayetteville, NC) – Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department’s Robbery Unit are investigating two (2) common law robberies that involved “purse snatching” in shopping centers along the Morganton Road and Skibo Road corridors. The investigation has revealed that suspects occupying a burgundy vehicle approached the victims as they were walking in the parking lot of the shopping center. The suspects engage the victims in conversation and once distracted, grab a purse or handbag from the victim’s possession. The suspects forcibly struggle for control of the property and then flee the scene. The Fayetteville Police Department would like to remind citizens when shopping of a few suggestions to ensure you remain safe: • Be alert of your surroundings. • Go shopping during the day whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with another person. • Dress casually, comfortably and avoid wearing expensive jewelry. • If possible, do not carry a purse or wallet. • Be cautious when carrying a wallet or purse. They are often targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas. • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to maintain clear visibility and freedom of movement to avoid mishaps. • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason! • If approached by a stranger, do not place yourself in harm’s way and allow the subject(s) into your personal space. • If you observe suspicious activity, call 911 immediately! Anyone with information concerning the robberies, is asked to contact detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department at (910) 433-1856 or Crimestoppers at (910) 483-TIPS (8477). You can also submit information to Crimestoppers by visiting fay-nccrimestoppers.org and completing the anonymous online tip sheet or by text-a-tip on your mobile device by sending a message to 274637 (in the text box type “4Tip” followed by your message).
