CRIME AND STATISTICS: Our men and women in blue do a great job and the most recent statistics showing violent crime in Long Beach is the lowest its been in 42 years backs that up. But it is very, very concerning and extremely serious that aggravated assaults and rape have increased, especially since the citys population numbers have remained fairly steady over the past decade. If, for example, young people are going to continue moving to the city, they must feel safe walking around their city, shopping, enjoying nightlife, etc. The police department needs to issue a report about where and when aggravated assaults and rapes are occurring within the city and adjust patrols accordingly. They also need to notify the public quickly about where these acts of violence are occurring so residents can be more alert when visiting certain areas of the city. Also, is there any relation to these increases to criminals being let out early? While most murders may be traced back to family disputes, that is not the case for assaults and rapes. So while city officials can rejoice in the overall numbers, they have much work to do in keeping residents and visitors safe and aware.
