CROOKES FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR JANUARY 15TH 2015 Hello All Alan Gill heralded the return of Crookes Folk Club from its Xmas break with a splendid set. A fine troupe of floor singers joined him to mark the start of our new Winter season. I keep getting stick for my seasons but, for all the doubters, consult a calendar, Winter began with the winter solstice on December 21st and will end with the vernal Equinox on March 20th. This week, we will be entertained by TOFFEE Music - Two Old Farts For Evening Entertainment (or Old Fellas if you are sensitive!). Mike has played guitar since his teens – Dave first ‘trod the boards’ over 40 years ago – so they have a century of entertainment experience between them! Jan 15th is VERY close to their 3rd birthday! By then they will have given the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity over £20,000 and the night’s collection and CD sales will go to them again, so lets do our best to get the second £20,000 off to a flyer. They will be showing their full range of talent – very short evening then (they said that, not me [SC])? No – expect their ‘normal’ mix of Music Hall, Vaudeville and Standards but also some Carolan, some self-written stuff and some more modern as well. And they promise to rise to the Wagon Wheel challenge! (No getting out of it now guys). CAPTIVES ON THE CAROUSEL Our guests on January 29th were to have been Captives on the Carousel, however, cello player Ben Eckersley has been taken ill, so they have been forced to cancel. We very much look forward to their return, later in the year, with a suitably patched up and refreshed Ben. Im sure that everyone at the club will want to join with me in wishing Ben our best wishes and hopes for a full and speedy recovery - were thinking about you mate. Gigs and Other Non-Festival Events I dont have the time nor, frankly, the inclination to trawl through Facebook Events, ReverbNation, Stirrings or leaflets looking for things to plug. So, if you would like me to put a line about your up-coming event in the newsletter, then please e-mail me at [email protected] . Ill try to get it in a couple of weeks before-hand, but in order for me to do that, you need to get it to me on the Tuesday of the week that you want it to appear (for instance, for your plug to appear in the Newsletter for January 16th - sent out January 9th to 13th, you will need to get it to me by Tuesday January 7th). Festivals Rather than add these to my THE PLUG section (as I have done hither too) I now have a dedicated section called FESTIVAL PLUGS (clever, eh?) As with all other plugs, you need to e-mail me at said address, I do not have the time, energy or inclination to trawl through leaflets, web pages, Facebook events or newspapers looking for things to include, no e-mail, probably no plug. I wont keep the plug in forever, but the turnover will be very much dictated by how many I am asked to include, itll be a case of first in, first out. As usual, we are at the Princess Royal, Slinn Street, SHEFFIELD, S10 1NW, doors open at 8:15, for an 8:30 start and there is no charge for entry, just bring a few quid to support the raffle and collection! All singers and musicians are welcome, there is no need to pre-arrange a spot, just try to get there early, so that we have the best chance of giving everyone a fair go.
