CROOKES FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR JANUARY 29TH 2015 Hello - TopicsExpress

CROOKES FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER FOR JANUARY 29TH 2015 Hello All Martin Roberts (yes it IS Martin, Im sure) endured a number of name changes in the course of his great debut performance at the club last week, Martin Gaughan Roberts Bands bass player TTony Evans joined him on stage for a great evening. Turn-out was a mite disappointing (but that will have been partly down to the big snow fall earlier in the week), but it didnt deter a small but perfectly formed troupe of floor singers from coming along and giving Martin excellent support. Great night, thanks everyone. This week, in place of Captives on the Carousel, who needed to cancel due to illness, we have Ian Gregg. Known as Sooty to his friends, Ian has been playing in bands and solo since the age of 11. Heavily influenced by the Black and White Minstrels the youngster achieved street-wide notoriety, after an appearance at Cross Street WMC, 1964, that has remained with him ever since. Brigandary status was maintained in his time with The Fruit (1966-8) Donkeysnot (1974-80) Two to Tango (1990-2005), Alfredss Skiffle Band (2007-2013) and So When (2011-present). These bands resulted in some life-long musical partnerships which he dearly regrets. Who can forget his magnum opus, Choc- ice - on- a- stick, cassette album, 1989....still available. His gentle artistry resulted in the twitch and short temper which endear him to audiences across one particular housing estate and even into neighbouring parishes.... (Yes, he does do charity work on a 50% of takings basis) Although famous now for periods of eerry silence, he can still hum a good tune, but cant recognise one and he never takes for granted his audience........ or that there ever was an audience. I started off singing in Mexborough to an upside-down yard-brush.. and still bear the scars The road goes forever on........... and heres a man still willing to sweep it! Guddy Shields Guddys Star Agency COMING DATES January 29 - Ian Gregg February 05 - Chris Baldwin February 12 - Clive Hudson February 19 - Paul & Liz Davenport February 26 - Blackwater March 05 - Peter Jagger March 12 - Steve Chapman Smith March 19 - Scuppered March 26 - Raymond Greenoaken TOFFEE Music Mike Lydiat tells me that the collection, raffle and CD sales at the TOFFEEs appearence at Crookes on the 15th totalled £112.84, all of which is now in the coffers of The Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, thank you to all who contributed and good speed towards your next 20,000 guys. MATĔJ ROMAN Over the last few months Matěj, who has been over here for a semesters study at Sheffield University has become a bit of a regular at the club, treating us to some wonderful guitar work along the way. He is now about to return home to his native Czech Republic, hopefully enriched by the experience of a few months living in Sheffield (the club has certainly been enriched by his presence). We wish him a safe and speedy journey. I have asked him to give Prague my old Skodas best wishes next time he is there. SHEFFIELD CITY OPERA Are you of a Wagnerian bent? If so, this may be for you. Kerrie Wells writes:- Sheffield City Opera are an amateur group performing fully staged grand opera, and also enjoy lighter music such as the work of Cole Porter, and excerpts from musicals like Westside Story. I checked them out last wednesday night, and they are a very friendly informal bunch of people who clearly enjoy what they do, under the expert tuition of their Musical Director. Their summer production this year will be Cinderella: The Opera. They are enthusiastically trying to attract more singers at all levels to their group, which meets every Wednesday at Wesley Hall on Crookes from 7.30 until 10pm. Their members come from far and wide, although they are mostly Sheffield-based. I appreciate that readers of this newsletter may not be hugely interested, but please could you pass on the word to anyone you think would enjoy this opportunity? The first contact is Jonathan Craven on 0114-266-2514 if you would like further information. Whilst I, personally, cant see the point of opera, I suspect that Kerrie may be underestimating the breadth of musical interest amongst the folkies out there, so am grateful to her for bringing this to our attention. See Facebook: facebook/SheffieldCityOpera , or interwebbythingy: sheffieldcityopera . For ALL plugs, please use [email protected] . Gigs and Other Non-Festival Events I dont have the time nor, frankly, the inclination to trawl through Facebook Events, ReverbNation, Stirrings or leaflets looking for things to plug. So, if you would like me to put a line about your up-coming event in the newsletter, then please e-mail me at [email protected] . Ill try to get it in a couple of weeks before-hand, but in order for me to do that, you need to get it to me on the Tuesday of the week that you want it to appear (for instance, for your plug to appear in the Newsletter for January 16th - sent out January 9th to 13th, you will need to get it to me by Tuesday January 7th). Festivals Rather than add these to my THE PLUG section (as I have done hither too) I now have a dedicated section called FESTIVAL PLUGS (clever, eh?) If you are the organiser of a festival and you would like me to give you a mention then you need to e-mail me at [email protected] with the following:- Festival name Dates Location 3 main headline acts OR a brief (no more than 10 words) summary of the nature of the festival (eg song sessions or sea shanties or Wagon Wheel variations). Closing date for early bird ticket sales Contact details, consisting of one or more of: web address, e-mail address, Facebook page, telephone number I shall include the plug for about 3 weeks prior to the closure of early bird ticket sales and then remove it once that date has passed, re-inserting it about 3 weeks before the event. As with all other plugs, you need to e-mail me at said address, I do not have the time, energy or inclination to trawl through leaflets, web pages, Facebook events or newspapers looking for things to include, no e-mail, probably no plug. CDs and Books I now have separate sections to plug CDs and books, but the e-mail address is the same: [email protected] . Ill need the name and contact details for finding out more (1 or more of snail mail, phone, e-mail, WWW or Facebook). I wont keep the plug in forever, but the turnover will be very much dictated by how many I am asked to include, itll be a case of first in, first out. As usual, we are at the Princess Royal, Slinn Street, SHEFFIELD, S10 1NW, doors open at 8:15, for an 8:30 start and there is no charge for entry, just bring a few quid to support the raffle and collection! All singers and musicians are welcome, there is no need to pre-arrange a spot, just try to get there early, so that we have the best chance of giving everyone a fair go. Disclaimer etc: I have tried to ensure that people do not receive more than one copy of this mailing and hope that all who receive it want it. If you have received more than one copy, or do not wish to receive any further ones, please e-mail me with the e-mail address in question and I shall endeavour to avoid any repetition. See you all there. Steve Cooper, Crookes Folk Club
