CRS 2015: DEMOCRATIC SELF CONTROL There is a common good that we all agree on which is good and Bad. The Problem is how quickly we can move forward with this idea. The idea here is to discuss on Democratic self- control. The concept appeals to players within a Democratic arena to observe the rules of the game. It reminds us of the need of putting our citizens ahead of our politics and ambition. What happened in Cross River State recently on number issues might not be unconnected to Democratic self-control. What is reasonable might be unreasonable? And what is unreasonable may turn out to be reasonable? But watch out so that you do not loose at the end. Nobody can fight government and nobody can fight the people. When there is no Democratic self-control of all parties involved there is bound to be no collective consciousness. The concept is also applicable to the foot soldiers behind a key player. If your foot soldiers are not having that Democratic self –control there will be a boom around. Who will pay the price? What triggered Democracy from the Greek City States was the issue of separating the good form of government from the bad one. Before Democracy was put in place in the Greek City States Society had undergone series of radical revolutionary changes which increased the number of people that had to participate in Government. Demo- means government (Rulers) cracy- means the people (Ruled). Originally Democracy is government of the people by the people and for the people? The word people have taken over that definition. How people have to participate and how decisions are to be made is the central Thesis? To my own way of thinking Democracy has become a process where even citizens with a good intention can disagree to agree on what is best for society to progress. Democracy is about competition of values and plurality of ideas. And it appears democracy is now the selling of a product in exchange for votes? Democracy is about many voices and many opinions. What is so important is the idea of basic fundamental rights that are associated with this form of governance. We have freedom of expression, Association, Movement and a host of others. But then there are limits attached to all these basic Human Rights to avoid gross abuse by Citizens. In Cross River 2015 we should not think of resorting to violence. We must abide to the rules of the game. The worst Democrat is the one that will fail to educate his supporters not to go on violence. The way we are going towards 2015 we all need to be cautioned. This is our chance.
