CSAS Screening – SALANGAI Oli (The Sounds of the Anklets (Tamil with English Subs, 14 Nov. @ 6 PM) This Friday (14 November, 2014) the UoE Centre for South Asian Studies will showcase an ‘iconic’ Indian movie classic, The Sound of the Anklets (1983, Salangai Oli in Tamil/Sagara Sangamam in Telegu), by one of the greatest auteur directors of Indian Cinema, K. Vishwanath, known for his pure, authentic and uplifting operatic dance-dramas that tribute the best of India’s ancient, and still continuing classical music and dance traditions. Featuring two of Indian cinema’s greatest dancer-stars, Kamal Haasan and Jaya Prada, Salangai Oli is a ‘rare’ musical dance feast depicting the unusual life journey of a multi-talented Bharat Natyam, Kathakali and Kathak dancer’s personal quest to reach the pinnacle of his art. Listed among the 100 Greatest Indian Films (by CNN-IBN) ‘as one of the finest articulations of unspoken human bonds and emotions’, Salangai Oli picked up the 1983 Filmfare (Indian Oscars) Awards for Best Director, Actor and Actress and the 1984 Indian National Film Award for Best Music (Illaiayaraja).
