CULTURAL NOTE: (Chicago area Ukrainians) Ok, I know I should be used to how disorganized we can be as an ethnic group. No one will ever accuse us of some sort of Teutonic sense of order! But..because of upcoming commitments we at my home decided not to bake paska this year. So, I called one of our larger parishes to ask if they will be selling it this year...the answer is yes, but then I have a question as to whether it must be ordered or is it first come, first serve? The answer then is that it is not decided yet. The next week I e-mail and they say, Oh, we have already baked some paska, we will bake more this week. So, yesterday, I am passing by the church and decide to stop in. They say, Oh, they baked it on Thurs. and the kitchen smells so good, but we sell it only on Sundays. Ok, so today I go to my Orthodox parish in nearby Niles very early, make my Lenten confession and get back in the car to drive the 10 minutes to the Cumberland Ave Greek Catholic parish and check on buying the paska. Well, the babas are downstairs having their cake and coffee and tell me, were not selling it this Sunday, itll be next Sunday! So, when I ask whether that will happen after each Liturgy, they give each other the same look that my dog gives me when I ask him, who dug the latest hole in the backyard? Ive grown up with the very relaxed nonchalant attitude toward waltzing in and out of church whenever we feel like it, setting a date and time and having 7:00 really mean 7:30 or 7:45, and not getting the answer you want unless you ask the question very specifically because our people often wont tell you extra info voluntarily, but honestly, sometimes it does get very exhausting! And if anyone in Chicago knows the answer to the elusive paska being sold on Cumberland Ave. please tell me! or tell them to please put the announcement in their bulletin or on the FB page. :-)
