CUMC Devotional - August 30 Excuses, Excuses, Excuses Its - TopicsExpress

CUMC Devotional - August 30 Excuses, Excuses, Excuses Its that time of year again. Its that time when my wife sighs, knowing that our household will be consumed with football for the next several months. I enjoy going to my sons games, high school games, and college football. One of the best things about college football is the conversations you can have with fans of other teams. I have a bet with two different fan bases in our congregation. Im an LSU fan and they are playing Wisconsin tonight. If Wisconsin wins, I have to wear a Wisconsin shirt on September 7th when I preach. The same is true when LSU plays A&M on Thanksgiving. If A&M wins (which looks more and more likely after seeing them the other night), Ill be wearing a 12th man jersey while preaching. Ive already asked for Gods forgiveness in advance, not necessarily for wearing a jersey in church, but for wearing an A&M jersey in the house of God. What could be more sacrilegious than that? (Something tells me there will be a response from my Aggie friends.) One thing I love about college football fans is their amazing ability to be subjective about their team. In other words, we have this amazing ability to ignore the facts and rational thought, especially when it comes to our own team. When other teams lose, its because they were beaten by a better team. When our team loses, there is a list of excuses, and the fact that the other team is better is not one of them. This is especially true in the SEC. Fans in the SEC are the most irrational in the country. If our team loses one game its time to fire the coach! We all make excuses, and frankly, sometimes they are valid in certain situations, but often our excuses are nothing more than ways to avoid being honest with ourselves and God. This is especially true with sin in our lives. Its easy to see faults in others without dealing with our own and recognizing our own need of Gods grace and forgiveness. Thankfully, Gods grace never ends and there is no need to make excuses. Prayer: God help us to be honest with ourselves, others, and most importantly, you. Thank you for this day and for our friends and families. Amen. In Christ, Brad Brittain By the way, if LSU loses tonight Im hoping my friend Neal will bring me a bratwurst with the Wisconsin jersey. He is from Wisconsin and makes the best bratwurst. Of course, if Wisconsin wins it will be because they cheated in some way.
