CUMC Devotional - January 1 New Today is January 1st and for many people it marks the beginning of something new. A new diet, a new job, a new attitude, a new year that will hopefully be better than the one that just passed, etc. If today really marks something new and different for you then that is great. We all need fresh starts in life but reality tells us that just because today is the first of a new year doesnt imply any real change in our lives. We dont lose ten pounds just because the calendar says January 1st and our relationships that were strained on December 31st are not automatically reconciled just because today is January 1st. Real change and transformation can happen on July 1st just as well as it can on January 1st. The real question is, Are we open to something new in our lives and what that might mean on a day to day basis? There is a great passage in 2 Corinthians 5:17 where Paul spoke of a new creation: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ. Lets remember today that we do not make ourselves new. Only God in Jesus Christ can work such a miracle. Prayer: Gracious God we confess that we speak out of both sides of our mouths. On the one hand, we say we want to be new creations in Christ, but on the other we want things in our lives to stay the same. We cant have it both ways. We pray today for an openness to the new life that only you can bring us. Amen. In Christ, Brad Brittain
