CUSTODIAL DEATH Punjab and Haryana High Court: Dismissing the appeals of six police officials, the Court upheld the sentence of life imprisonment awarded to them by the Trial Court for abduction, illegal confinement and torture of a youth leading to his death in police custody, mainly by giving him electric shocks. DGP of Punjab has been directed to constitute a special investigation team to catch the then DSP Gurjit Singh, who was the mastermind of the incident and has absconded ever since he jumped parole 7 years ago. The Bench of Hon’able M. Jeyapaul and Hon’able Inderjit Singh J.J., said that "it is a case of custodial death." The State of Punjab has been held vicariously liable for violation of "human rights and fundamental rights" of the deceased and directed to pay compensation of Rs. 10 lacs to the parents of the deceased Ravinder Singh within 3 months.
