CUSTOMER ADVISORY CONGESTION AT CHITTAGONG PORT There were around 32,481 TEUs containers piled up at Chittagong port yard. Moreover discharging import boxes were going on from 9 different vessels which will hike up the number of containers at Chittagong port more than 35 thousand TEUs. This creates an unprecedented situation at Chittagong port with highest number of containers stacked in the history of Chittagong port. As per CPA (Chittagong port authority) Chittagong port has a capacity to place 36,356 TEUs. On basis of this statistics Chittagong port has reached 94% its total capacity. And ideally there should be 30% of space kept unoccupied at port to comfortably move containers around inside port area. However this situation has dropped down the ratio of unoccupied space to mere 6% hence the container movement inside the port area has been impacted heavily and consequent slowdown of operational activity. Due to the severe operational slowdown vessels are experiencing long waiting time at outer anchorage to get berth at jetties. Owing to this congestion maintaining pro forma feeder vessel schedule has become difficult and delayed berthing, long stay at port and subsequent delayed sailing has made feeder vessel connection to prefer mother vessel at transshipment port is uncertain.
