Café: Woza Address: 69 Burg Street 021 422 0053 Operating hours: Weekdays 7am to 5pm Dish eaten: Breakfast special Price: R30 @WendylMartin It’s a pity this place isn’t as busy as it could be. I’ve been following Woza since its time at the Golden Acre. The restaurant served pap and vleis daily, making long, cold work days more bearable. Fortunately, Woza has moved up in the world. It is now at the spot previously occupied by the Dutch-owned Sequoia Café. It is an improvement on the old location, which was opposite a hair salon that emitted smells from industrial-strength products. The restaurant now has much more dining space and offers a full café service. A decent breakfast option if you aren’t afraid of the carbs is the roosterkoek (R5) or vetkoek (R5), which you can fill with mince (R10). My colleague and I strolled in this week to find quick, good service. I ordered a bargain of a breakfast: coffee, two scrambled eggs, two big strips of bacon, two small beef sausages and a grilled tomato – all for R30. Don’t worry about being late, the restaurant serves breakfast all day. My colleague was a little more adventurous, ordering a thick slice of Dutch apple pie with cream (R25). It was served a little cold, but was promptly warmed on request. It looked big, moist and worth the cash. If you are keen to try what the restaurant does best, take a walk downstairs to see and try its meat dishes. You can have beef stew for R31, or tripe for R23. I recommend the beef stew; it’s a big portion with a generous amount of gravy. Coffee prices aren’t too steep, which is good for an office district. A regular latté is R12, a large R15. If you are a bit more adventurous, there is Zimbabwean beer called Chibuku, made from fermented maize and sorghum. I like what Woza has done with the place. It has added bright colours, such as reds and yellows, to a corner that seems in cursed rotation. I hope this pap joint-cum-café lasts. [email protected] Twitter: @WendylMartin
