Cairo, Egypt 2007 - A young boy carries a carpet on his shoulders in Cairo. Much of the countrys young generation is jobless. During Mubarak’s time, many young people opted to leave the country, seeking a better life in Gulf countries or Europe. University graduates completed their studies knowing they would not work in their specialty while the countrys service sector employed qualified university graduates to fill odd jobs. On a personal level, there was no place more alienating for me than the streets of Cairo when I returned in 2005: Are you Egyptian? Are you sure? You have an accent! You must be Moroccan .. Algerian? You dont look Egyptian! The streets became the natural setting for my self discovery and understanding of the essence of what is Egyptian. This is where I had to belong. Even as early as 2005 it was obvious there was a big political change simmering, something about to explode. A muted sadness hovered over people on the street - the majority of this country of more than 85 million lived in poverty and many were just like me: trying to belong in a country where everything seemed foreign, even the people.
