Cala Martina, also part of Scarlino’s municipality, is less - TopicsExpress

Cala Martina, also part of Scarlino’s municipality, is less known and frequented than Cala Violina. It’s a particularly fascinating site due to its wilder natural landscape covered in colourful cobbles. Its sea depths are rough but very clear. The site is also surrounded by Mediterranean macchia and woods along three of its sides, making it hardly visible and almost inaccessible. For its shore can only be reached by foot following a steep wooden staircase. Cala Martina is therefore a more secluded spot than the nearby Cala Violina. Off peak hours, when less visitors are on the beach, the silence of this site becomes almost heavy. It feels like being the only inhabitants on the coastline, as if time stopped at the Etruscan age. Yet a sea memorial and a monument in the macchia take us back to more recent times, on 2nd September 1849, when Garibaldi managed to escape by boarding a fisherman’s boat to land in the Gulf of La Spezia two days later.
