Cali,July 27, 2013: The packed El Pueblo Coliseum witnessed only the Rhythmic Gymnastics competitions on Clubs tonight at The World Games 2013 Cali, with the competitions on Ribbon having been cancelled. The 23 competitors, who had performed on Hoop and Ball on Friday, took to the Rhythmic floor today to qualify for the third Gymnastics medal event at these Games. In the final Melitina Staniouta of Belarus (17.983) prevailed by a narrow margin over Ukraine’s Ganna Rizatdinova (17.933) and Alina Maksymenko (17.900) to become the World Games Champion on Clubs. Many gymnasts seemed to have problems in handling their clubs today. Was it due to sweat and heat or rather nerves at performing in front of such a large and lively crowd? Whatever it was, failing to catch their clubs cost Kseniya Moustafaeva (FRA) and Elizaveta Nazarenkova (RUS) a place in the final. They ranked 9th and 10th respectively. Alexandra Piscupescu (ROU), who ranked in the midfield on Hoop and Ball yesterday, failed to control her apparatus more than once today and had to accept a disappointing position at the foot of the table. In addition to top qualifiers Ganna Rizatdinova and Alina Maksymenko of Ukraine, who mastered the situation impeccably and with apparent ease, China’s Deng Senyue also impressed with her performance. The crowd showed their appreciation for Deng’s pirouettes and were excited to see the Olympian qualify for her first final in Cali in third place. While freshly crowned Ball Champion Staniouta also showed a little hesitation during her qualifying routine today resulting in 6th place, Carolina Rodríguez (ESP) stormed the Colombian public’s hearts with a fluent exercise and her Spanish castanet music. Qualification results The top-level final was exciting from beginning to end. Maksymenko, who was first up, set the bar high, performing flawlessly and being rewarded with a 17.900 total. She achieved the highest score of the day for execution (9.200). Rodríguez (ESP) followed with a solid routine, but a stumble at the end meant deductions and a final sixth place. Anna Trubnikova had impressed during qualifying with daring throws and precise catches but in the final she lost control of her clubs twice. She had to accept .35 in deductions and last place. Even though she improved on her score from the preliminaries, confident-looking Deng fell back to fourth and out of the medal places. Rizatdinova then performed elegantly and beautifully to her slow music piece, taking the lead with a 17.933 over her compatriot. Arina Charopa (BLR) produced a creative routine, mastering her apparatus, but her 17.066 left a gap to the top-ranked gymnasts. Staniouta performed second to last, overcoming her mistake from qualification and stunning the crowd with amazing throws and catches, culminating in a perfectly timed final pose. Still, she could not believe it when she saw her name at the top of the scoreboard. In the end the difference between Gold and Silver was just .05. The last performer, Victoria Veinberg Filanovsky, scored a 16.050 that placed her seventh.
