Calif. mans kind deed causes trafficking accusation (VIDEO): No good deed goes unpunished, but the punishment is rarely this weird. A California millionaire tried to be a good Samaritan to a stranger who got confused by his charity and accused him of attempted child trafficking, the Los Angeles Times reports. Rolando Garcia of Covina, Calif. was shopping in meat market Wednesday, beaming from good news that day that a trucking company he runs had a profitable 2014. He came to the Baja Ranch Market to buy food for a celebratory company barbeque. He was so high on happiness that, after spotting a woman with her 2-year-old son at the checkout line, he offered them a $100 bill. Garcia told KTLA-TV that when the woman declined his donation, he offered it again in the parking lot and told her: “Yes, it’s yours. I give it to you. It’s for your child.” The woman misunderstood his mirth and quickly told police Garcia tried to buy her son. Police initially investigated the claim as a human trafficking case and released suspect information for Garcia and a pastor friend who was with him in the store. Several local media outlets first reported on the case as a crime, leading Garcia to reach out to the police himself. Only after detectives interviewed Garcia on Monday did they realize he committed a random act of kindness, not crime. Covina Police Sgt. Gregg Peterson told the Los Angeles the mother thought she was “protecting her child.” Garcia acknowledged in the Los Angeles Times that he could have handled the handout better, but still said he believed the mother “did the right thing.”
