Californians, if you can spare the time, please call your member of the Assembly on Monday and ask them to vote for S.B. 828, the 4th Amendment Protection Act. This bill will forbid California from providing material support, participation, or assistance to any federal agency which violates our Fourth Amendment rights. (Unless a court has authorized them to violate our Fourth Amendment rights.) Zaki Manian points out that this bill would oblige our Attorney General, Kamala Harris, to take a position on the constitutionality of the NSAs mass surveillance programs. The bill in its present form unfortunately no longer forbids local jurisdictions in CA from assisting in federal violations of the 4th Amendment, but its a significant improvement on the current situation. It has already passed the State Senate. A simple majority of the Assembly will put it on Gov. Browns desk for signature.
