Call For Papers Islam and Gender Justice – The Emergence and Contestation of Women’s Religious Authority in Muslim Societies 3rd Annual Study of Islam Graduate Conference: Saturday, 13 September 2014 The Study of Islam programme at UJ is dedicated to providing graduate students with a forum to present their work and research. Graduate (Honours, MA and PhD) students working on Islamic Studies or the Study of Islam are invited to submit an abstract dealing with the theme of Islam and Gender Justice – The Emergence and Contestation of Women’s Religious Authority in Muslim Societies” for the 2014 graduate conference. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): · Muslim Women Led Religious Institutions · Islamic Scholarship and Women in South Africa · Women and the Qir’ah / Hifz(Recitation / Memorization) Tradition · Muslim Women, Traditional Madaris and the `Ulama · Muslim Women and Sacred Space in South Africa · Muslim Men in the Struggle for Gender Justice · Muslim Women in the South African Liberation Struggle and Political Landscape · Islamic Feminism and Decoloniality · Muslim Personal Law in South Africa · Hadith and Gender Professor Amina Wadud, one of the most cited scholars on Islam and Gender, will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Abstracts of no more than 200 words must be submitted by 11 August 2014 to Safiyyah Surtee (safiyyah.s@gmail). Submissions should include the author’s name, institutional affiliation (if any) and contact information (email and telephone number). Accepted applicants will be notified by 15 August 2014. Additional Information · Conference fees are R100 for all participants (including UJ students) which includes lunch and tea. · Limited accommodation is available for presenters from outside Gauteng. Should your abstract be accepted and you require accommodation please email safiyyah.s@gmail as soon as possible. · Travel expenses and travel arrangements will not be covered or organised by UJ (transport to and from the conference venue may be negotiated with other participants subject to their availability and location). · Acceptance of a proposal and confirmation of participation constitutes a commitment by the presenter to present at the conference. · The duration of presentations will be 15-20 minutes. Presenters should ideally plan their presentations for 15 minutes with a maximum of 20 minutes allocated per presentation. Presentations will be followed by a 10-minute response and question & answer session.
