Call for Papers - Representation in the Classical World The second UWICAH postgraduate Classics conference will be held on Saturday 15th November at the Lampeter Campus of the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David in collaboration with the Trinity Saint David Classics Department. Proposals for papers are invited from postgraduates who are specialising in: Classics, Ancient History, Egyptology, Ancient religions, Archaeology of the Ancient World, Early Christian studies, or Ancient Near Eastern studies; from the Bronze age to late Antiquity. Abstracts are invited from PhD or MA or students studying in the Universities of Cardiff, Swansea and Trinity Saint David. The closing date for proposals, of no more than 300 words, will be Saturday 25th October. A copy of each proposal for a 15 minute lecture/ presentation at the conference should be sent to the following Lampeter email addresses: [email protected] (Jill), [email protected]. (David) and [email protected] (Susan). Successful applicants will be informed as soon as possible after the 25th October; and the finalised programme published a few days before the event. While the event aims to highlight the research work of postgraduates at the Welsh universities listed above, postgraduate submissions from appropriate candidates at other universities will also be considered. Guidelines for proposals: The following list is not exhaustive but may give applicants some guidance on appropriate subject matter for consideration: Representations of the divine, including gods, goddesses and heroes within temple, sanctuaries, shrines including household gods. Representation of individuals or deities in statues, coins, funerary art, frescoes, tombs and other physical artefacts. Imperial representations in sculpture, coinage, architectural ornament etc. Representations in literary works including the depiction of deities, heroes or significant people in plays, prose or poetry. Attendance at the conference is free, including complimentary tea/coffee and buffet lunch. There will be an evening meal for participants in a local restaurant at the end of the conference. There will also be a couple of slots during the conference itself which will look at issues of interest to postgraduates wishing to pursue an academic career.
