Call for Papers Panel: “Religiosities in the Margins: Boundaries, Locations and Mobilities” AAS Annual Conference, ANU, Canberra, November 6-8, 2013 Convenors: Roger Casas and Tiffany Cone In a world increasingly determined by globalized economic and cultural flows, and by the potential risks and uncertainty these flows bring to different locales, religiosity continues to play a fundamental role in the establishment and negotiation of social boundaries and cultural stereotypes. In spite of alleged world “disenchantments” and secularization hypotheses, allegiance to creeds and practices broadly labelled as “religious” is nowadays arguably more important than ever in the forming and contesting of individual and group identities. This panel seeks to explore processes of definition and regulation of spaces for religiosity, paying particular attention to phenomena of marginalization and their contestation. How do religiosities relate to local, national and global hierarchies of value? How can religion become a source of empowerment for marginalized groups or individuals? In what ways do subjectivities generated in religious mobility intersect with those promoted by national governments? What role can anthropology play in elucidating the dynamics of such processes? In this panel, and drawing on insights provided by anthropological approaches, we aim to question long-standing assumptions and to move beyond analyses that posit religious actors against a repressive state, or that define religion solelyas either a search for meaning, or as an instrument for legitimacy. We are especially interested in the ways different actors (including those in the academic context) engage in the production of the religious field, looking at a wide range of phenomena –from state regulation to mass political mobilization, from trans-border pilgrimages to revivalist cults, from self-cultivation techniques to “superstitious” practices. If you are interested in sharing your research with us, please send a paper title and abstract (no more than 250 words) to Tiffany Cone ([email protected]) or Roger Casas ([email protected]) before August 1, 2013.
