In most countries of the world, installation of anti-theft immobilizer device is compulsory. In immobilizer-equipped cars, engine cannot be started without a coded key which is synced with cars Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Thousands of Pakistani consumers are deprived of their cars every year due to absence of immobilizers in Pakistani assembled cars. Indus Motor Company, the assembler of most powerful Toyota Corolla cars, which is also the most stolen cars, are not installing immobilizers in any of their cars. Honda Atlas motors, assemblers of Honda cars are providing immobilizer only in their most expensive Civic car and not in Honda City. Pak-Suzuki is giving immobilizer in Swift and Liana only In order to curtail the rising incidents of car thefts, all car assemblers and importers should be bound to sell only those car which have anti-theft immobilizers. All other anti-theft devices and satellite trackers have been cracked by car lifters and its only immobilizer that the thieves have not been able to crack so far. Senator Rehman Malik, the former minister for interior, had announced that Indus Motor Company had agreed to start installing immobilizers in Toyota cars, but so far they have not done it. If government makes immobilizer installation compulsory, it would be a great service to people of Pakistan who are hapless before the car lifters and losing their hard earned life savings.
