Call for nominations for Colombo Plan scholarships. Potentially excellent opportunity to study abroad. If youre interested, let Steve Threadgold know. Contact Nicole Latham for more information (her contact details are at the bottom of the blurb below). Below is the information sent out to staff about the plan. Steve wanted it to go up here: if someone wants to repost it in BOSS and Socio-Logos, too, that would be great. The Federal government has launched the New Colombo Plan Scholarships for 2014. The government intends to start with a pilot programme in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore this year, and aims for it to be fully operational in 2015. The University requests your assistance to identify potential scholarship candidates. This is a wonderful opportunity, to the benefit of both student mobility and experience, and contributing to the University’s internationalisation aspirations. We strongly encourage you and your colleagues to participate, and to promote and support the Universitys best and brightest students. We recognise and appreciate the University’s current level of support and commitment to internationalisation via student outbound mobility, which for 2013 provided for the mobility of 227 students across all faculties in 17 countries, being supported by A$370,200 in Government and Scholarships. The New Colombo Plan Call for Action is a A$100 million, five-year programme that will offer scholarships covering the full costs of study abroad for up to 300 undergraduates for one or two semesters, with smaller subsidies for shorter programmes for many more students. The scholarships offer up to AU$67,000 for up to 1 year study for each successful applicant. The 2014 pilot program will provide scholarship opportunities and AU$4 million in mobility grants across 4 pilot destinations of Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore, ahead of the wider roll out of the New Colombo Plan from 2015. During 2013, we had semester exchange arrangements in place for 25 students to 3 of these pilot destinations (Japan - 19 students, Hong Kong – 3 students; and Singapore- 3 students). Where possible, the scheme will also provide internship or mentorship arrangements with businesses, NGOs or government agencies in host countries. The University’s International Office is now accepting expressions of interest from undergraduate students. To be eligible, students must: • be an Australian Citizen aged between 18 and 28; and • have already completed at least one year of an undergraduate bachelor degree with a 70 per cent graded average or equivalent. Expressions of interest are due to the International Office by 5:00pm Friday, 21 February2014. For more detailed information, please refer to the guidelines and expressions of interest form, which can be found online at dfat.gov.au/new-colombo-plan/ncp-guidelines-scholarship-program.html The University’s International Office will assist both you and your students through the nomination process. Ms Nicole Latham, Manager of Student Experience and Community Engagement, is the contact person for both academic staff and students. Nicole can be contacted by email ([email protected]) or phone, on (02) 4921 6617.
