Call for papers: Essay Cluster on Biographical Fiction a/b: Auto/Biography Studies abstudies.web.unc.edu Contact: [email protected] Inquiries and essays should be emailed to Michael Lackey at [email protected]. Essays are due by June 30, 2014 and they should be between 7,500 and 10,000 words in length, including notes and the Works Cited pages. All essays must follow the format of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th ed.) and the a/b Style Sheet, which can be found at this address: abstudies.web.unc.edu/submissions/. All submitted essays should have a relevant theoretical framework and participate in contemporary conversations within the field of auto/biography studies. Potential contributors may find it helpful to refer to back issues of a/b: Auto/Biography Studies prior to submitting their work for consideration. Individual articles and full issues are now available on Project MUSE. Despite the rise in the number of and critical acclaim for biographical novels, there is still little scholarly work theorizing the nature of this genre of fiction. This essay cluster seeks submissions that focus on the biographical novel, its origin, evolution, and various forms. What has led so many writers to pen such novels? What could these writers see that Woolf, Lukács, and Ellison could not about the possibility, power and value of the biographical novel? How does the biographical novel access, engage, and represent history differently from the classical historical novel? What transformations in literary and intellectual history made the biographical novel possible? What liberties can authors take with their subjects? And what liberties can they not take? Possible topics include: The rise of a new aesthetic form Religion and/or biblical figures in the biographical novel Slave insurrectionists in the biographical novel Representations of the Holocaust or anti-Semitism in the biographical novel The biographical Künstlerroman Feminist biographical novels Representations of mental illness in the biographical novel For the complete Call for Papers, please refer to the images attached to this post.
